Yessir!
I liked the way Stewart developed the character without ever making Picard too touchy-feely. He set him up as very much the Professional Military Officer without being too heavy handed, and then slowly let the "human" side unfold. The only other actor who came close was Spiner's Data.

I have spoken.

see, I grew up past TNG, and looking back it looks rather cheesy to me, although not in the same way as TOS. I still enjoy the classics like Yesterday's Enterprise and All Good Thing's though...

I was pretty lucky - I was 20 when TNG came out and it was only semi-cheesy! Plus, I discoverd TOS in 1974 so it still had almost state of the art effects.
If we are to be honest, we must admit that a dash of cheese is an integral element to any Trek series. The only time I think they over-cheesed it was DS-9. I mean, Trek in an shopping mall?

DS9 had good enough acting for me to cover the cheese. I thought Sisko had the most depth of any captain to date. Voyager was VERY cheesy, and not in the visual way, but the acting. Each character on their own was decent, but their interactions were HORRIBLE!

Now that I stop to think of it, I might agree with you. Neelix and his little blonde friend were a trifle too much.

I was 27, I think, when Next Gen started....I remember my BFF was so against it! She said "you can have that Captain Picard! I want my Captain Kirk!"...a few years later she was dying to go to a convention with Stewart because she just wanted to pet his bald head...

I think it grew as a show and ultimately provided some of the best episodes of television ever made. By any measure, it is the most successful Star Trek, having not only lasted 7 years, but also spawning 1 definite spin off (DS9) and setting up a universe for another series.

I still haven't watched much TNG beyond what I saw when Spike had it on after I got home from school, and what I bought at the used video store. not much.

I cannot recommend Star Trek The Next Generation enough... get past the early eps where they were trying to figure out what hairstyle was best and go right to season 3...it's seriously an amazing experience.

And I didn't mean to imply that Stewart and Spiner were the only good actors in the bunch. They were all at least capable! Worf could very easily have turned into a one-note song but Dorn kept it pretty real.

Agreed...while Spiner and Stewart were huge standouts, the rest of the cast were not slackards at all....frankly, I think LeVar Burton was amazing as Geordi. He inhabited that character to the point it's hard to imagine another in the role...In fact, I worry that more than any other actor in the series, he might be "typecast"...fortunately he seems to have focused on directing so should not feel the stigma....

And that PBS show of his... Reading Rainbow, I believe.

It's just odd to see him sans visor.

Reading Rainbow was an amazing show! I used to love that show when I was a kid. Of course, I also love to read.

I too am a huge fan of tng. When it started, I was -5 years old (meaning I wouldn't be born for another 5 years), and I remember discincly watching and loving tng, even though I didn't even understand what they were saying.

That is quite moving. I'm deeply touched. I have to go to bed now.

okay, you may jest, but there is some seriously good TV there....does HULU have Next Gen? The year to watch is season 3....though, it's best if you've watched a few of the earlier eps to know important things like, Tasha Yar "who is she? she died?".
